Definition of TMJ

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder is a condition that affects the hinge that connects your jaw to your temporal bones in your cranial region. The temporal bones are situated in the front of each ear. The temporomandibular joint is responsible for your jaw moving up and down as well as side by side. It allows you to chew, yawn and talk. Both TMJ and TMD occur as a result of issues with the joint, surrounding facial muscles or even the jaw itself.

Symptoms of TMJ

You might feel pain or discomfort in the jaw or face, especially joint pain around the temporomandibular joint. You might even experience head pain, neck pain or even shoulder pain. The cranial pain could affect only one side of your jaw or both sides. You might notice you have pain that extends in or around your ear, in particular, when you speak, chew or open your mouth wide. Your jaw may become locked in an open or shut position. You might experience a clicking, grating or popping noise when the joint moves. The noise isn't always accompanied by pain, but it can be. Your face may feel tired. In addition to the cranial pain, you might have difficulty chewing or an uncomfortable bite that arises suddenly. You could experience dizziness, earaches, hearing problems, toothaches and even ringing in your ears.

Causes of TMJ

An injury to your jaw, muscles in your head or neck or joint could cause temporomandibular disorder. For instance, whiplash could lead to TMJ. Grinding or clenching your teeth could place pressure on the joint. Arthritis or stress or tension could lead to TMJ as well.

Chiropractic Treatment for TMJ

While a chiropractic treatment alleviates the need for drugs, it can also rid you of the need to undergo surgery. Our chiropractor may recommend you have a chiropractic adjustment by putting pressure on the skull, spine or jaw. The adjustment will relieve pressure on the nearby nerves. It also has the potential to increase the jaw's range of motion. The alignment will relieve pressure, which has the potential to relieve your headache pain.

A chiropractor may recommend you undergo massage therapy. A massage relieves discomfort from stress and tension in the area. It also has the ability to break up any scar tissue in the muscles around the joint. Our chiropractor may recommend you make some lifestyle changes to relieve your pain and discomfort.
